DESTINATION INFORMATION

Tobago is a mere 26 miles long by 7 miles wide but is full of natural beauty ~ palm-lined beaches, lush rain forests and pristine coral reefs teeming with rich marine life, and is also home to the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere.

The South (Windward) Coast is washed by the dark green Atlantic and lined with vibrant fishing villages, while the North (Leeward) Coast provides Tobago with some of its finest beaches.  Most of the eastern landscape of the interior rises steeply into tall peaks and rolling hillocks.

When sugar failed in the late 19th century, this plantation island was annexed to Trinidad for political convenience.  Now almost exclusively relying on tourism, the abundance of white sandy beaches and natural beauty offers plenty for visitors and locals alike.

The capital, Scarborough, has many quaint houses which spill down from the hilltop to the waterside.  After the Europeans first settled the village in 1654, the area was known as Lampsinsburgh.  Many battles amongst the English, the Dutch and the French have left the city we know today.  In 1769, the House of Assembly was transferred from Georgetown to Scarborough, making it the capital of the island.

Today, Scarborough is still the chief port and administrative centre of Tobago.  You can get a wonderful bird's eye view of the town from the British-built Fort King George, built in 1779 during the many struggles between the French and the English, and is an excellent point from which to view the sunset.

FIXTURES

Brian Stollmeyer has been looking after our tours in Trinidad and Tobago since we first operated there many years ago.  Brian is part of a famous Trinidadian cricket family (his father captained Trinidad & Tobago as well as the West Indies; his uncle played for both) so you can be fully assured that he is well-connected and your games are secure.  Brian played rugby and cricket during his university education in England and Scotland.  He has travelled extensively in Europe, North and South America.

WHAT TO DO

  • Buccoo Reef and Nylon Pool Tour ~ Revealing the stunning beauty, visible from the glass-bottomed boat, this trip will also provide an excellent opportunity to snorkel. Finish up in No-Man's Land for a rum punch and beach BBQ.

  • Argylle Waterfalls ~ Great for photographers, but guides are recommended as the walkways are slippery!

  • Fort King George ~ Museum and fabulous view from the top of the hill overlooking the harbour.

  • The Witches Grave ~ Local myths abound in this area, known for its belief in superstition.

  • Sunday School ~ Open air dance and music fest next to Buccoo Beach.  Listen to steel bands, reggae and calypso, with food from street food stalls. Starts late!

  • Tobago Museum ~ Displaying artefacts from Tobago's early American Indian and Colonial days.

Some dining suggestions:

  • Dillon's Seafood Restaurant ~ Specialising in freshly caught lobster and fish.  If you've been out on one of their fishing charters, you can take your catch there and they'll prepare it the way you like it!  Crown Point.

  • Pelican Reef ~ Popular eatery, with regular entertainment, serving an international menu.  Crown Point.
