DESTINATION INFORMATION

The former British imperial enclause has been rapidly changing since the hand-over from British colonial rule to Chinese sovereignty in 1997.  Situated at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta, Hong Kong island is the core of the old colony, while Kowloon just across the harbour forms the other half of the main conurbation.

Hong Kong is compact so visitors are never too far from the major sights and the shopping opportunities. The city also has an excellent transportation system so visitors can easily reach other areas, no matter where they stay.  The Star Ferry, which has been taking visitors on the short route between Hong Kong island and the Kowloon mainland since colonial times.

This year there are several new and exciting attractions to enjoy, including magical fun at Hong Kong Disneyland, nature up close at the Hong Kong Wetland Park, and the timeless culture of Ngong Ping 360.

The brand new Peak Tower, from where you can  enjoy panoramic views over city and seascape, and then there's the nightly multimedia show that lights up buildings on the Hong Kong harbourfront and will soon be seen from the Kowloon side for an all-round visual extravaganza.

Prepare to experience shopping like never before! Major designer labels are all well represented throughout Hong Kong's sparkling malls, while there's many a bargain to be had in the city's delightful open-air markets. SkyPlaza is an innovative shopping mall located within SkyCity, a glittering new complex adjacent to the airport that also features a range of entertainment.

The Hong Kong Space Museum is has one of the largest planetariums in the world, the Space Theatre, which features both Omnimax screenings and Sky shows several times daily.

As well as traditional fine dining, great shopping and world class hotels, Hong Kong also has lesser-known natural beauties; looming mountains, secluded islets, white beaches and island landscapes.  Without a doubt, Hong Kong is unique!

TRAVEL

As Hong Kong will probably be a stopover en-route to Australia or New Zealand, we would recommend you either use the combination of British Airways/Qantas to Australia and Air New Zealand to the 'Land of the Long White Cloud'.

The following are the airline options to Hong Kong:

  • British Airways ~ Direct from London Heathrow, daily
  • Qantas ~ Direct from London Heathrow, daily
  • Virgin Atlantic ~ Direct from London Heathrow, daily
  • Cathay Pacific ~ Direct from London Heathrow, four times daily
  • Air New Zealand ~ Direct from Auckland to Hong Kong, three times weekly.

FIXTURES

Whilst we have had many tours in this brilliant and quite individual part of the British Empire, the number of tours now visiting have declined as the majority of tours that could go there now travel in the summer where, because of the weather, sport, apart from golf and horse racing, takes a break.  If you want to travel outside the summer period, fantastic!

ACCOMMODATION

Like most major Far Eastern cities, tourist accommodation is plentiful and great value for money.  The minimum standard we would recommend would be 3*.

An example of a great value Island hotel is the 3* Salisbury YMCA offering very good, affordable accommodation in Wanchai, located close to the main shopping and entertainment areas and and the MTR.

It has 272 rooms all of which have the following facilities:

  • Air conditioning
  • Fridge
  • TV and radio
  • Telephone
  • Tea and coffee-making facilities
  • In-room safe
  • Hairdryer

The hotel also has a restaurant, bar, coffee shop, business centre and fitness centre.

The Marco Polo Gateway Hotel is an excellent 3.5* accommodation, offering 431 rooms in Harbour City, Hong Kong's largest shopping and entertainment complex near the waterfront in Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon.  The world famous Nathan Road and Star Ferry Terminal (1st class travel to the Island) are within a short walk. Bar and restaurant facilities available as well as the use of the swimming pool at the sister hotel, Marco Polo.
